You can keep your mouth and your body healthy if you follow these 3 simple, easy, healthy tips every day.
1. Eat healthy foods and drink healthy beverages
Your gums (like the rest of your body) love fruits, vegetables, seeds, grains, fish and calcium-rich foods like milk, yogurt and cheese. Not good for your gums (or your body): starchy, sugary and sticky foods like cookies and candies.
Also, drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of non-sugary fluids a day like water, milk and unsweetened tea and coffee. This helps to produce more saliva and wash away bacteria in the mouth. Avoid high-sugar drinks like pop and fruit and energy drinks.
Walk, bike, jump, hike. Whatever way you like to move, just do it. Only 20 minutes a day of physical activity contributes to better sleep, a stronger heart, sharper memory, stronger bones & and healthier gums.
3. Give your gums 5 minutes
Brushing and cleaning between your teeth are the most effective ways to keep harmful bacteria under control. Brush your teeth, your tongue – and especially your gums – at least once in the morning and before you go to bed. Clean between your teeth before one of those brushings to remove food debris and bacteria that cling and multiply between the teeth. You can use dental floss, a soft pick brush, a pre-threaded flosser, water flosser, interdental brush or a plaque pick made of plastic or soft wood.
Also, use an antiseptic, non-alcohol mouthwash a couple of times a day, especially before bed, to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.
Oh, and visit a dentist or dental hygienist at least twice a year to have your gums checked out. A professional can find problems you can't and also offer a simple test to examine your mouth for gum-disease-causing bacteria.
Follow these 3 simple tips and you'll be flashing perfect pink gums that show how healthy you are :)
